In 2011, nearly 2.5 Million people were newly infected with HIV worldwide. Although the rate of new infections has been sinking by almost 20 per cent since 2001, there were living 34 million people infected with the HI-virus two years ago – 17 per cent more people than in 2001.
In some regions more than one quarter of the population aged between 25 and 49 is infected with HIV or already suffering from Aids. Nearly 70 per cent of the affected live in Africa south of the Sahara. Furthermore, affected individuals and their families often have to face extreme poverty and therefore are strongly dependent on humanitarian help. Additionally, many babies are born HIV-positive every year, because their mothers are already infected. Thousands of small children lose their parents due to Aids.
Besides medication, many of the infected are in need of psychological assistance to be able to handle better their fate. On betterplace.org you can find various projects, from big NGOs and smaller initiatives, that are lending valuable assistance to the people affected by HIV and Aids.
