Mohanam Cultural Centre

managed by G. Roth

About us

Mohanam Cultural Centre is the work and realisation of a group of young men from the surrounding villages of Auroville, the universal city located near Puducherry. Since 2001, the Centre in Sanjeevinagar has worked to bridge the divide between traditional and modern, old and young, Auroville and the surrounding villages through creative and goal-oriented programs for children and adults.

Located in the Kaluveli/Auroville Bioregion of coastal Tamil Nadu, South India, the Centre is established in one of the last traditional old houses of the village. It offers creative arts classes on the weekends and evening tuition for school aged children, has a daily crèche/kindergarten for younger children, and actively promotes survival of the region’s rich artistic heritage. Mohanam Cultural Centre also fosters community development through its women’s empowerment workshops, livelihood training and health promotion projects.

Mohanam Cultural Centre brings the rich arts of Tamil Nadu back to the villages and to the world through its courses, programs, activities and performances. The heritage centre provides a place for villagers and Aurovillians to share in their expression of the Divine, and to be a real bridge between the past and the future. Aurovillians, guests, and local people with knowledge and skills come to share hatha yoga, traditional healing, meditation, ecological harmony, health awareness and more, with people eager to learn.

In its ten year history, Mohanam Cultural Centre has witnessed increasing ‘informal freedom’ in the children who enjoy the opportunities provided at the Centre. A safe space is a place for boys and girls to express themselves and learn about their culture, they have an outlet for their energy and creativity and are inspired to learn about themselves, their history and even learn new skills with positive guidance. Furthermore, the children at Mohanam are given the opportunity to learn about the wider world, opening their eyes and minds to diversity and wonder.

Vielen Dank an euch ALLE!!!
