Maendelo Learning Center was established over 12 years ago to serve children from the Mukuru Kwa Reuben informal settlement area within the Nairobi South region. The school offers academic development for both primary and secondary school children, with a population of 120 students in the primary school section and over 90 students in the secondary school section. Over the years the centre has experienced a challenge in maintaining the teaching staff, being a community school where in most cases they are expected to offer services on a voluntary basis. As a result the number of students keeps on fluctuating due to the low number of teachers.
The centre’s main activity is education and counseling for the children and their parents.
It was founded basically for the main purpose of offering the less fortunate, vulnerable and destitute families the chance to gain basic education and skills that would enable them to be able to fit in the today rather competitive and complex society. The centre started with Pre-School up to class 3 with a population of 45 kids in the year 2003.This number grew gradually and by the year 2006 we had come to approximately 300 children with around 100 kids fully depending on the school for their education. By the year 2009 the school population was now close to 500 children both primary and high school.
Due to lack of adequate facilities since the existing facilities were fading away and parents are not able to pay promptly, we lost a number of families mostly going back to the streets. We were not able to recruit new students because majority is supposed to board but we are not able to take care of them at the moment. The population now stands at approximately 200 kids. There is demand for more kids to be enrolled but we are still holding due to insufficient facilities.
The center also shelters orphaned and vulnerable children who call it home.
