Current situation at Dream Childrens's Home

Let us take a look at Kenya!

The following rules currently apply there:
- Obligation to wear a mask
- Distance rules
- Curfew between 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Due to the Covid pandemic, Dreams had to close the Lekuruki School for many months last year starting in March 2020. This meant that the children had to be taught in the home. Obviously, this situation was not easy for anyone, but since the beginning of this year, schools have been opened again. The school year has been extended until this May, so that the children of the 8th grade can catch up on their final exams. (We are very proud to announce that our students did very well in their exams!)
Also in May (instead of January) the new school year will start.

As you may know, international air travel was also significantly restricted all around the world last year, including flights to and from Kenya. This had a significant impact on the Kenyan population in general but also on Dreams and its children. Visitors and volunteers were no longer able to visit the home, which meant that important donations of money and goods were missed. This led to great financial shortfalls for the children's home, which survives to a not inconsiderable extent thanks to visitors’ donations.

Even though it sometimes feels like it, 2020 wasn't all bad. Thanks to your donations, the entrance to Dream Children’s Home was renewed and a new house was built. This house provides space for an additional office and a large dormitory for the girls!

While many of the projects from 2020 have been completed, we are already planning new ones! For instance, with your help we could construct another school building and buy more land! It is not only children from Dreams who attend the Lekuruki School, but also children from outside. It is very important to ensure that students have contact with children not living at Dreams, however, this leads to the school and school compound becoming very crowded! In addition, during the current Coronavirus situation, keeping a safe distance is difficult. Therefore, both the construction of a new school building and the purchase of additional land are very important. In the future, we would like to offer more space for play to develop for our children.

Ongoing problems for Dream Children’s Home are also paying teachers’ salaries and finding sponsors for 8th grade students. Unfortunately 2 teachers have left Lekuruki School because they are getting better salaries at other schools. In order to avoid more teachers changing to other schools, we have had to adjust the salary of all teachers. This causes additional challenges for us.
The 8th graders' exams will be held in May. After that it is very important for the students to go to a secondary school. Unfortunately, these are quite expensive, so we are constantly looking for sponsors for this age group.
In addition to that, four of our Form 2 (two more years of secondaryschool) students are looking for a sponsor, since their sponsors stopped sponsoring.

And that's where you come in! Are you interested in helping a child attend school, do you know someone who would be interested in sponsoring or are you willing to donate? (Any amount is appreciated!)

If you have any questions, we are happy to answer them.
