Ecodesaster - Protect the National Park with trees before the monsoon in june

The community of Suntakhan, a village of about 5,000 inhabitants at the foot of Shivapuri National Park near Kathmandu, urgently needs support in the reforestation of a destroyed hillside property. As a result of an illegal construction project, an approximately one hectare community site was illegally destroyed by clearing and terracing. The clearing of the slope is an ecological disaster. The area lies in the buffer zone of the Shivapuri National Park and thus the water catchment area of the underlying village. The destruction can lead to landslides, which endanger the national park further up and threaten the inhabitants of the village. Therefore new trees have to be planted before the monsoon.

The Long Yang e.V. carries out this reforestation project in Nepal together with the Nepalese organisations Akasha Academy NGO and HEACOP NGO.

What's the point?

  • Planting of the mountain slope with local plants, forest and useful trees in a planting campaign lasting several days before this year's monsoon (planned: June 2019).
  • Workshop for the community in cooperation with the local NGO "HEACOP", in which practical knowledge about agroforestry and the advantages of reforestation for people and the environment is provided.
  • Accompanying campaign at the local village school for World Environment Day on 5th June 2019

What are the goals?
  • Long-term erosion control
  • Preservation of the water reservoir
  • Knowledge transfer and awareness raising
  • Strengthening local activism for environmental protection
  • Creation of a training area for agroforestry systems, where further workshops for the community can take place later.

What is needed?

Financing for the purchase, transport and planting of seedlings (approx. 150 native forest and fruit trees, other plants such as forest berries, Himalayan bamboo, etc.), further training of the local community and care of the plants for 6 months.

Donate now!

The time is pressing, before this year's monsoon most of the reforestation has to be finished. We would be pleased if you support the financing with your donation. With a donation of 20 € (or more) you can plant and grow one of 150 native forest and fruit trees in Suntakhan.
