On September 30, an earthquake that measured 7.9 on the Richter scale devastated the city of Padang in Western Sumatra. It is now estimated that several thousand people have died after Wednesday's devastating earthquake near Padang. Tens of thousands of people are homeless, sleeping in the streets for fear of another earthquake. CARE staff on the ground report that houses have been destroyed, roads are blocked by debris, electricity is out and communications lines are down. CARE responded to similar earthquakes in the same area in 2007. An emergency team has been deployed to the worst-affected area and distributions of emergency supplies will begin immediately.

Population affected: Over 700 confirmed killed, but estimated up to 4,000 likely. Unknown, but estimated hundreds of thousands of people affected
