A Taxi Ride can save a Life

We all took taxis, whether because we were too tired, or had too much luggage going or coming from a vacation, or couldn’t easily reach an address. We’ve all been there.

However, sometimes a taxi ride can save a life.

Vitalijs cannot stay in the hospital anymore. He is homeless and was admitted in the ER in a hospital because of his cancer a month ago. 

Cancer is a chronic disease, but his wounds are not “so bad” anymore that it's enough for the hospital to keep treating him without having a medical insurance. He was simply released back on the street. The hospital asked where our next appointment was, they sent him to the daycare center we were at and just drove away.

We meet Vitalijs and find out, among other things, that he cannot walk because of the pain. He does not know where to go or what he can do next. We learn that nobody spoke to him directly during his stay in the hospital, because of the language barrier. Vitalijs is disoriented and confused, and still needs a medical consult.

We bring him by taxi at an ambulance for homeless people. There he gets basic medical help.

With huge difficulties me managed in the short period of time to organize a place in a shelter, which accommodates him without charge. Vitalijs can stay there for now, but he still needs constant medical care. Between the shelter and the ambulance for homeless people is a distance of 10 kilometers, which is impossible for him to walk. There are also appointments at the embassy, ​​the social services, etc., which he must personally attend.

In this case, taxi driving is not a luxury. Please help Vitalijs to come through the city. A taxi ride costs about 20 euros, his open wounds need to be cleaned twice a week.

Eine Taxifahrt kann Vitalijs das Leben retten. 

Vitalijs kann nicht mehr im Krankenhaus bleiben. Er war zuvor auf der Straße; wurde wegen seiner Krebserkrankung vor einem Monat eingeliefert. Krebs ist eine chronische Krankheit und seine Wunden sind „nicht mehr so schlimm“, dass es für das Krankenhaus reicht. Er wird auf die Straße entlassen. Das Krankenhaus erkundigt sich nach unserem nächsten Beratungstermin,  bringt ihn mit einem Transporter zur Tagesstätte und fährt weg. Dort finden wir heraus, dass Vitalijs vor lauter Schmerzen nicht laufen kann. Nach der Beratung weiß er nicht wohin; wir bringen ihn mit Taxi in die Ambulanz für wohnungslose Menschen. Dort bekommt er medizinische Hilfe. Wir organisieren einen Platz im Wohnheim, das ihn auch ohne Kostenübernahme aufnimmt. Da kann er erstmal bleiben. Zwischen medizinischer Versorgung und Wohnheim liegen 10 Kilometer, die er unmöglich zu Fuß schafft. Dazu kommen noch Termine bei der Botschaft, dem Sozialamt, etc., die er unbedingt persönlich wahrnehmen muss.

In diesem Fall ist Taxifahren kein Luxus – bitte helft Vitalijs durch die Stadt zu kommen. Eine Taxifahrt kostet ca. 20 Euro, seine offenen Wunden müssen zweimal wöchentlich gereinigt werden.
