Too many orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) in this community are growing up in situations of scarcity without education, healthcare, strong parental support etc. Similarly, grandmothers who care for the majority of orphans are overwhelmed, doing their job under very difficult, unsupportive circumstances. Grandmothers are simply doing what they know and what they love doing, day after day.

Most of the orphaned children face social isolation and serious difficulties. Basic needs (particularly education, shelter, food and medical care) are the greatest areas of need with respect to orphans and vulnerable children in Rhonda community, within Nakuru town.

In a community with very weak or practically non-existent social safety nets, CBOs and indigenous (local) NGOs are also struggling to survive. Many do not have the resources or enough staff with the right skills and training to enable them to effectively address OVC related challenges. Learning and Development Kenya faces similar challenges like other local NGOS in the area.

This project aims to improve and sustain on the current services LDK is providing to orphans and vulnerable children, and grandmothers in Rhonda community of Nakuru town in Kenya. The services currently targets to change the lives and open the doors to the future for 68 orphans living in the home (orphanage) and additional 300 vulnerable children living within the community with either their poor parents, grandmothers, or guardians.

With support, a child will receive everything he/she needs for an education – tuition, school uniform, school supplies and one warm meal a day while grandmothers will be supported at home to take care of the children after school and during weekends and school holidays. The orphans in the home will be supported through this grant to attain their full potential through access to education.
