Education is seen as the key to break through the deep poverty. With these school scholarships at Youchaou's School you can allow kids being able to read and write, learn the most important things to find a job later.

The vision of our primary and secondary school “Youchaou” was dreamt by the local community leader in Kalabancoro, Youchaou Traore. Many families in Kalabancoro would approach Youchaou and plead for a school to which they could send their kids. Construction and expansion has been supported by the Mali Initiative since 2004. Now the children need help to cover the school fees and equipment.

Quality education for the poor is a major focus for our schools and so class sizes are limited to 35 students. Teachers undergo regular training to improve their teaching techniques, ensuring that students are engaged and are learning effectively. Computers have been donated by the Australian Telecommunications Company Telstra. Computers and the internet facilitate learning for students, teachers and staff.

I visited Mali in January 2008 and had the chance to get to know the people behind the Mali Initiative, Youchaou, Elise and Jürgen. We visited the first school Youchaou, an energetic local social entrepreneur, had initiated in a poor neighbouhood of Bamako and were greatly impressed. The school stands in stark contrast to most of the educational institutions in the country, not only being in a pleasant and well-equipped building, but also teaching enthusiastic children in classes consiting of 20, instead of the up to 100 students common in Mali. Youchaous work, supported by Elise and Jürgen, can make a real difference to the dire educational crisis in Mali, were the vast majority of children don't ever go to school at all.

    Liebe Betterplace Leser,

I am currently working at the school. When I first got there, I was very impressed by the quality of education offered to the kids: They learn in a healthy and secured environment. Since then, I decided to get involved. Sharing my experiences will be very helpful for the kids. I recommend that everybody stop by and add up is or her little help.

I am currently at the school. It is around 2:00pm here and students are about to resume the classes for the afternoon. I have been working here as a trainee for a little over than 8 months and I have a full understanding how important this kind of social enterprises is for the children.
