‘Thalassemia “ is a genetic blood disease, in which all the patients mostly the young children have to undergo blood transfusion once in 21 days for keeping up their Hemoglobin count. And they need medicines every day and the only cure to them is “Stem Cell Therapy” or Bone Marrow Transplantation . Unfortunately there are around 42 Children undergoing regular treatment ( Blood Transfusion ) in Madurai, India and they are from economically downtrodden families who cant buy medicines for their children. These people are unable to bear the cost of control and cure of Thalassemia and face many issues due to high cost of blood transfusion, medicines, treatment, etc and there is no separate ward or room for blood transfusion for these patients in hospitals and they are unable to access the doctors and hospitals at times due to extreme poverty condition.
Nivethan, a not for profit organisation based at Madurai helps the children with Thalassemia through arranging blood for transfusion, donate medicines and give counselling for treatment.
Nivethan as part of its Mission Thalassemia project has now planned to support Thalassemia patients to get treatment. In this regard, support for the following activities is seeked now from donors and individuals
a.providing medicines to 42 patients identified by Nivethan
b.Financial support for screening 42 children through blood test and other tests
c.Fund for doing matching test for patients before they go for bone marrow transplantation
d.Raise funds for patients for their bone marrow transplantation

I was invited to attend the meeting held in Government Hospital in madurai, after which i understood the need for helping those children affected by thalassemia who were from econimically backward families. Nivethan trust in madurai has taken efforts to ensure that the children are getting with proper medication atleast. For this to continue in the future, everybody's support is required. I am providing support by way of donating blood for one child. So I would recommend you all to support this project in all possible ways.

I went for meet between patient's family and a doctor from chennai in a hospital in madurai.I saw about 42 children affected from thalassemia and their family. The patients were from econmically backward family and the doctor from chennai was kind enough to offer consultation for the patients and advised them to follow a few things. This meeting gave me the real picture of what nivethan was trying to do in this project. I would recommend all to support this cause. I knew about this meeting after browsing through the trust's website(www.nivethan.org). So all the activities carried out by nivethan are immediately updated in the website and all can update themselves by visiting the site.
