Poor sanitation in schools have multiple ill effects: poor health, low school enrollment, absenteeism, poor classroom performance and early school dropout specially among girls. This project is aimed at inculcating good hygiene practices among children and to provide them with adequate sanitary facilities for conducive learning environment and to practice proper hygiene behavior. Due to absence of sanitary facilities in the villages and schools there are high incidence of water and sanitation related diseases specially among children. Furthermore open defecation is leading to contamination of the river Cauvery on the banks of which the villages are situated. Through the school sanitation program we aim to make children the change agents and to help children imbibe healthy and hygienic behavior . WTO is addressing community sanitation through a separate sustainable sanitation program
The key features of the school sanitation project are:
Hygiene Education
Formation of School Health Committees
Health Camps
Hygiene Kit
Train the Trainers
Construction of 2 new toilet blocks
Repair and retrofitting in 5 school toilets
Sanitary Napkin Incinerator for Adolescent girls in schools

The project will be implemented in partnership with our on ground member organization who has developed expertise in urine diversification toilets, an ecological sanitation technology. Ecosan is a holistic concept to prevent contamination and pollution of water and to re utilize the excreta into fertilizers and nutrients

Moving Right Along...

In the months of July and August, Scope, WTO's partner in India, started renovations for toilets in seven primary schools and conducted "Training of Trainers" programs for 50 teachers. All seven schools have freshly renovated toilets for their students - a grand total of over 1,300 students!

Upon to receiving the approval from the local ministry and school, construction of a new sustainable toilet commenced in early September for an additional school. Building will be completed by the end of September.

In addition, hygiene kits are being distributed to the students. The kits include a bar of soap, a tooth brush and other items to help them maintain better sanitation. The teachers are working with the kids on how to use the products.

All in all, we are very excited about the new and refurbished toilets! A closing ceremony will be held on Oct 2, in conjunction with Ghandhi's birth date.
