Skateistan - What's that?
Skateistan is Afghanistan’s (and the world’s) first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment programs. The students are selected from all of Afghanistan’s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. They will develop skills in skateboarding, skateboarding instruction, healthy habits, civic responsibility, information technology, the arts, and languages. The students themselves decide what they want to learn; we connect them with teachers who will enable them to develop the skills that they consider important.

Since Skateistan has been active in Kabul, we’ve seen that Afghan youth of all ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds love to skateboard. Skateistan brings them together, equipping young men and women to lead their communities toward social change and development.

I live in Austin TX USA, our local skateshop, 'Apparition', supports Skateistan. That's where I learned about this project and I whole heartedly support it. It's ideas like this that bring hope and possibility where often there is none. Please consider supporting this worthy cause.

Do you guys have problems with military or political pressure? Can you work freely with the kids, do you also get local support? I have skated for years and to me skateboarding was a important part of my life. Skating is a way of being free and creative. You skate with friends, you use the streets creatively and you want to get better and achieve something. If you can manage to get the skaters into some school classes as well I think you can make a difference. What kind of classes besides skateboarding do you teach? All the best, Max

Political and military pressure are ever present in any activity in Afghanistan. Obviously our work and strategy is framed within the context of the current political and military situation. Local support is inherent to the implementation of our activities. As you stated, skating is a way of being free and creative. As such, we offer the opportunity for kids to do this in a safe and positive environment and it has been well received by the community so far. Without the kid's and community's desire for Skateistan activities to happen, they wouldn't. Currently our programs aim to micro-finance all working, non-enrolled children back into public school. Additionally, we will be providing after school tutoring sessions and pre-skate session classes which discuss health and current events. Also, we will be offering cultural courses in areas such as Afghan poetry, theatre, history, painting/drawing, and music. Best, Max
