Thanks everyone and update from Cape Town

Wow we did it!  The Boxgirls in Nairobi and our team from Berlin want to thank everyone here at Betterplace for their support for equipment purchases and getting the young women together for a coaching workshop.  We met some delightful new young women on this trip who are stepping up to be coaches in addition to the women who have been working as coaches in their zones and learning how fun but also how much responsibility it is to take care of a group of rambuncious girls from their neighboorhood. We were impressed with their interest in learning new skills and to see how the young women were improving their boxing.

We also had the chance to deepen our relationship with the sport and youth ministry - we are trying to get access to a currently closed school gym space in Kariobangi that we could turn into a girls and women's sport centre. there is a field in front and a basketball surface but it is all in great need of repair but it would be a start.

After Nairobi I contimued on to Cape Town in South AFrica and met with the people getting Boxgirls Kayelitcha started.  We met this spring and the sport people from the city of Cape Town and the amateur boxing federation as well as women judges and coaches.  I will say more about our boxing workshop in a new post.

Please take a look at our projects in Berlin (Neukolln/Kreuzberg) and our new project in South Africa!

Thanks again for your generosity. I hope to have a new film up soon to show you all some of the progress.  With all the excitement about our project we could also use an accountant/book keeper...if you can donate a few hours a month we would be very grateful.

All the best from Capetown

Lots of new friends for Boxgirls - short update

Oh my goodness what a crazy last few months!  Great days for Boxgirls.  Let me just list some points for our friends on betterplace:

I was invited by the Jacobs Foundation and the UN Office for Sport for Peace and Development to hold a lecture in Nairobi on SPort and Productive Youth Development.  The conference was great and people were very interested in cooperating with us to build currciulum against gender based violence and learn about grassroot project evaluations.

you can see some of the fun photos of the UN representatives and the head of the Jacobs foundation at our boxing workshop under www.jacobsfoundation.org

While I was in Nairobi the Kenyan Ambassador to Germany had arranged for me to meet with Permanent Secretaries from the Ministry of Gender and the Ministry of SPort and Youth Development in order for them to learn about our successes and how the government can help bring it to scale.  We (I took some of the young women from our Nairobi project) were graciously hosted and we have a list of activities that we will do together - starting with a coaching workshop for the male boxing trainers this August!

I also got the chance to meet with some representatives from comic relief who would like to see our project grow into other parts of Africa.  -- Boxgirls Botswana anyone!

Rosalia wins exciting bouts at 1st girls cup in HH

Rosalia from Boxgirls Berlin came first in the 60kg category at the first ever Girls Cup in Hamburg this Saturday and Sunday. Over 15 women from Berlin and friends from Hamburg joined by a few hundred local fans converged on Wedel a boxing hotspot for the tournament. There were female boxers from Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark and all over Germany brought together by a hard working team of organisers from BC Hanseat and BC Wedel. For the International Frauen Kampf Tag - the girls enjoyed a well organised tournament (unfortunately not the rule in amateur boxing in Germany), with women running the timing and introducing the fighters as well as lot of female trainers and fans. Boxgirls Berlin put up a display on our work with Nairobi that was read with a lot of interest. Our friends from BC Basel have indicated they would like to support our work, perhaps by inviting some of our pros to a tournament in Basel in the fall. This tournament showed me how much fun boxing is and how many people really enjoy seeing strong girls show their skill and technique. Congrats Rosalia on two well fought fights but even more important congrats to everyone who made this 1.st girls cup such a success - photos can be seen on our website www.boxgirls.org and in the gallery here.

s

Here is the video from our Sport fuer Maedchen project last year.  We will work with 6 Berlin schools this year with our Sicher im Kiez project. We still have 3 spaces for schools who want to do a project week with us focussing on girls' safety, self defence and media skills.  The Sicher im Kiez project is sponsored by the Berliner Kinder und Jugend Stiftung
