Clean water for the Endode School in Ethiopia

With the financial support of Viva con Agua, the Endode elementary school will have better access to clean drinking water.

The local partner organization 'Water Action' will conduct all project arrangements and assembles the constructions at site. With a donation of 9.359 Euro Viva con Agua takes over about half of all project costs, being 19.127 Euro. The remaining amount will be provided through the fundraising activities of 'WaterCan', a Canadian NGO.

The Endode School is situated in a drought area in Ethiopia. At this moment, a stand post, dug by hand, is the only water supply station accessible. This is completely insufficient for satisfying the needs of over 1.000 people (students, teachers, personnel).
Moreover, only one single dry latrine is provided for the whole school community.
Due to these circumstances, numerous of the people relieve themselves in the surrounding fields, which in turn is an endangerment for health and the environment. Some of the students try to avoid this situation and wait the complete day until they are back at their home place, in order to use the restroom. The described circumstances entailed the frequent absenteeism and even school drop outs, especially in regard of young women.

The following actions have been decided upon and planned together with the Endode School:
• Clean Water: Building of 2 stand posts with hand pumps
• Sanitarian Provision: Building of 3 latrines with separate water basins (for girls, for boys, for teachers)
• Hygiene training course: Composition of „Hygiene-Clubs“ with culturally and age-appropriately aligned training course offers
• Capacity Building: Training of water- and sanitarian engineers, establishment of water- and sanitarian committees for the regularly testing of the new facilities, check of the water quality, maintenance of the hygiene training courses, etc.
