Siquijor:
Siquijor is the smallest of the island provinces in the Visayas region and the third smallest of the Philippines, both in terms of its surface area and the number of inhabitants. About 87,000 people live on the mountainous island which has a circumference of 50 miles.

Medical Care:
Siquijor Provincial Hospital (100 beds)
Number of Doctors - 5 / Doctor Population Ratio - 1:16,320
Hospital Bed Population Ratio - 1:544

Mission Description:
Our mission aims at reaching the socially disadvantaged part of the population of the islands and attending to untreated surgical diseases. In addition to the patients of the island Siquijor, a cooperation for patients from Cebu is planned, who are there attended to by the German project Doctors for Developing Countries and are in need of surgical treatment. (I participated in this project there on site in July/August 2011.)
The following diseases are supposed to be surgically attended to: thyroid surgery, inguinal hernia surgery, variceal surgery, small-sized soft tissue tumours, haemorrhoids, gallbladder surgery, chronic wounds (ulcers, decubitus), traumatological primary care, carpal tunnel surgery, Dupuytren’s contractures.
Currently, there is no primary care of severely injured patients who had an accident. They are brought immediately to the next bigger island by the rescue boat (a trip of about 40 mins), in any wind and weather, without adequate stabilisation for the transport. Local representatives will be educated in emergency medicine in the course of the project.

Accommodation:
My family living on Siquijor provides board and lodging.

Mission Period:
The planned surgery period will be two weeks with an additional two weeks for follow-up treatment and possible complications.
Emergency training: two weeks including trauma management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Recruiting:
● 4-6 months in advance: announcement of the project
by local authorities and hospital.
● 1-2 months in advance: social screening
by members of the long-standing Cebu project Doctors for Developing Countries
● 1 month in advance: names, diseases, medication, age of patients
are communicated to us by members of my family (nurses)
●1-2 weeks in advance: determination of surgeries by me.

Cooperation on site:
Governor: Orlando A. Fua Jr.
Chief Physician: Edith Cortes
Captain of the Rescue Boat: Mario Maglinte

Aim:
Treating the socially disadvantaged part of the population and exchange of knowledge with the local colleagues. Establishing an annual mission with the cooperation of the Saarchirurgische Vereinigung (Surgical Assocation of Saarland). Building up a First Responder System in cooperation with the German Red Cross St. Ingbert.
