Fountain Youth Group is a registered community based organization, established and managed by local youths. The organization was established to Nurture, Empower and Transform vulnerable young people in Githurai.
Githurai is an informal settlement on the outskirt of Nairobi, it has approximately over 450 000 people with more than 60% being young people. The community has limited public infrastructures which are in bad conditions hence illiteracy and unemployment rates are above 45% thus high rate of poverty which has resulted to young people to engage in commercial sex, drug abuse and criminal activities.
Fountain Youth Group and AIESEC interns have developed Nurturing and Turning point whereby Nurturing involves ensuring reading culture is cultivated in the community, best reading skills and vulnerable children have access to school supplies. This is being achieved through establishing community library whereby BOOKS4CAUSE has accepted to donate and transport 20 000 reading books to the port of Mombasa hence the organization has to meet clearance cost and transporting to Githurai. The organization is also outsourcing school supplies for vulnerable children.
Turning point involves training and mentoring vulnerable youths with enterprenuership skills then put them in a social enterprise incubator where their ideas are nurtured then transformed into business then assisted to establish business by supporting them with seed capital which they pay later. Four groups have completed the training and mentorship hence only one is in the incubator because of not forthcoming seed capital.
These projects currently have three staff from organization and six AIESEC interns and this project is going to benefit more than 100 vulnerable children who are orphans, Sudanese refugees and from single parents hence will access school supplies thus not sent away from school, develop reading culture. The vulnerable youths who are young single mothers, disabled & jobless who are more than 50 to benefit annually by gaining enterprenuership skills and mentorship hence later supported with seed capital to start business. This will ensure illiteracy levels are reduced and more young people with be involved in business hence reduced unemployment rate thus prosperity & development in the community.
The biggest challenges, the project is facing is lack of financial resources to implement what has been designed and lack of support from local leaders.
Through donations, the reading books from BOOKS4CAUSE will be cleared and transported to Githurai hence community library will be established also vulnerable young people will be in position to have school supplies every semester thus not sent away from school. Vulnerable local youths who have been trained and mentored will be in position to start business.
