PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) is a German initiative which made it possible to build, equip and develop the unit to an autonomously operating part of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, Sri Lanka. PICU was started as a consequence to the 2004 Tsunami catastrophe, which left so many children dead since intensive care treatment was missing.
All money for the PICU came and comes just on the basis of donations.
At present 8 doctors and 18 nurses are saving the lives of more than 120 deadly ill patients per year; and this with only 4 1/2 beds out of targeted 7 beds operating.
Plan now is to extend PICU by an Intermediate Care Station (IMC) on the upper floor. IMC is an essential part of intensive care: After direct life saving interventions beds are now blocked with patients who should be treated in the specialized IMC where close treatment over 24 hrs is guaranteed. All IMC equipment was sponsored; it is now waiting for shipment to Sri Lanka.
Autonomy and good standards in intensive care need a quantum leap in speed and radical acting as THE success drivers. The German doctors and nurses are trying to support their Sri Lankan peers to accomplish that level. A fostership agreement had been settled - mostly about training for doctors and nurses, either in Germany or in Sri Lanka. Quite recently tele-medicine has been started for diagnosis, therapy, and e-learning with very promising first results.
What's needed? As said - financial support for the trainings; specific pharmaceuticals for the treatment of children; cost of fast internet connections are not covered; bitterly poor parents often from far come into PICU for their last hope and don't have even a bed or food.
And not to forget - the target is 7 beds instead of 4 1/2 now, totally equipped with modern technology. And the Sri Lankans are dreaming of an ambulance to carry ill children from far villages.
And you can be absolutely sure – as in the past – not one cent of the donations will be misused, all goes directly into the project without any administrative cost. The local Lions Club of Hikkaduwa controls the investments, takes care and stands for this promise.
1,5 Million children in the Southwest region around Galle and the targeted 7 PICU places – this is just the famous drop in the ocean, but a very important one, since it might become the starting point of a new era of medical treatment for children in Sri Lanka.
