Due to an increasing demand by families, various schools as well as the youth welfare service of Berlin Neukölln, we have developed a demand-oriented program in April 2011 to assist Roma-children who have just recently moved to the area.
During the playful leisure program in the afternoon, 30 children aged six to twelve can get support in school-related matters and can expand their knowledge of the German language through common, creative and lively activities. Furthermore, there is a wide choice of leisure time activities. Contents are demand-oriented so that children with differing levels of previous knowledge can find suitable offers. Both, children without German language skills and children with negative school experiences are taking part in the program. The pedagogically trained and experienced team of voluntary tutors includes, amongst others, native-language team members to whom especially children with little knowledge of German can express their wishes. In this respect the offer is designed with a low threshold.
To align the program to the demands of the parents, we offer parents’ evenings and we can provide for advisory service and mediation, if requested.
In addition to regular leisure activities, we offer workshops and we cooperate with other institutions and organizations. Moreover, we arrange excursions with the children and we offer holiday play schemes during school holidays.
The program currently thrives on the commitment of ten volunteering Roma and students. Besides that, we are especially in need of contributions in kind and monetary donations for school and craft supplies, fruits and bread for snacks, cooking and creative workshops, excursions and administration.
