Havilah Academy school is a project. It was started in 1999 to provide a means of quality education to the poor rural folks. Even though there was a school which was run by the government, most of the children who graduated from that school scored very bad grades and so they couldn't qualify for admission into any senior high schools. So year after year, the community and those surrounding it had chunks of educated illiterates. Having realised what the problem was, poor tuition and lack of proper supervision in the government school, Havilah Academy was started with one main objective; to provide free but quality education to them thereby helping them gain good results that will enable them gain admission into the secondary schools.

Thankfully, we've recorded 5 batches of students (about 50 in all) who have gained admission into secondary schools and some have even furthered to the university.

As the population grew biger and bigger, more and more teachers were needed and teaching and administrative expenses grew. So it become necessary for us to charge very small amount of fees to enable us pay teachers salaries and attend to other administrative expenses.

Those wooden structures which were built some 12 years ago have not been replaced with new ones. The activities of termites have even worsened the problem. Now the structure(which you can see from the pictures I've uploaded) needs to be rebuilt.

And this replacement should be done immediately before the unwanted happens;it might collapse completely thereby killing people.

So please come to our aid.

    Hi Sir Geoffrey,

I have seen the e-mail you sent to my wife andrea and know to me.
Thank you for your information about the situation to rebuild havilah. I aggree with you that it is better to make it new in another way as before, because wood is not so resistant as bricks are.

I think we will get the whole donation in the next few weeks from now and in hope with a early start of rebuilding.

    With best regards

    Thomas

    Hello Geoffrey,

we have helped you to bring the donation from zero to 40%, it is about 400 €.
The last time, when we get a look on it, the figures are changing from 40 to 25%. Please tell us about this situation, because our friends can not understand it.

    Best regards

    Hello Mr. Thomas

I acknowledge your help and in fact it has been magnificent.First of all greetings from my family and greetings from Havilah Academy. Thank you and your husband and everyone who are helping with Havilah Academy project.
I'm sorry I didn't add any comment when I added 'cement need'. It cost much to buy the bricks and nowadays in Ghana the woods(beams) cost a lot. With the cement and sand we can mould the bricks. With the 170 cement bags we can mould about 3750 bricks and some of the cements too used to plaster the building. With this number of bricks we can build 5 classrooms.

Even though the classroom structures are made of wood, the wood nowadays are quite expensive. The least expensive wood costs 10 ghana cedis so about 5 euros. which means we can buy about 248 pieces of wood (when we add 440 euros and 800 for the cements). The problem will be that termites(animals that eat wood) may eat it and in about 5 years time we may be coming again for help. Which is not good.

But if we build the buildings with bricks it will last for a very long time. So from this analysis your donations would be better used.

The only problem and mistake on my part is that I should have discussed that with you. So please forgive me for not pre-informing nor commenting.

I've discussed the moulding of bricks with the male teachers and they want to volunteer.

Please if you have further questions or suggestions let me know it as soon as possible because I'll be glad if you continue with your support but not to withdraw it. Whatever monies that will be forwarded to me I promise to use them for the purpose. We are partners in development.

    My kindest regards.

    Hi Sir Geoffrey,

know I´am proud to tell you about a new couple, who supports the havilah project. Their names are bettina von sass and helmut oertel. Helmut is a lawyer and bettina is a journalist near regensburg. They gave us 50 €. Helmut will show the article in his law office. So we have the chance to get more attention for the project.
I hope you give us new information about the progress of havilah.

    So long

    Thomas

    Hello Geoffrey,

Believe it or not, I (along with some other volunteers from England and Scotland) actually helped to raise funds for and build some of the original classrooms way back in 1999. The school was wonderful then (I spent several very happy months working there from Nov 1999 to January 2000) and it was doing some wonderful work. Can you let me know what's happened to the school since - how/where the children are learning now - and more about the gentleman who founded the school ((who I knew by a different name) - was he your father?)? I may be able to contact and get some support from some of the original volunteers who helped construct the buildings which now look so worryingly unsafe.

Good Morning Joe Thornton (did I get the 'Joe' right?, where you the guitarist?)

I thought I'd never get anybody to express interest in this fundraising project. I'm glad it's one of the volunteers. Yes I remember very well how you and other volunteers painstakingly build the classrooms.

The classrooms were moved from the house to a new site. The site is behind the main house (big house). During the relocation we moved the woods to the new site. So this woods have been old and explains why the school building looks very bad. We have not been able to replace them because we have not been able to raise funds out of the school fees (you know how poor the rural folks are). The school children are still learning in the building which you have seen in the pictures.

The gentleman who founded the school-Nana Kwoa Budu III, the chief of Amoanda- is now an apostle of God. So he is no longer a chief. He is my father. He is in USA some reasons one of it is to find sponsors for the school. For reasons best to God he has not been successful in this regard.

I am the second child of Nana Kwoa Budu III now known as Apostle Inkum. I'm heading the school now.

I shall be glad if you come to the school's aid. God bless you.
