Der Jahrestag war ein voller Erfolg! Viele Eltern der Kinder, Dorfschullehrer aus den Wäldern, Freunde und Bekannte kamen um die neue Schule und das Programm der Kinder zu sehen. Wir hatten sogar royalen Besuch von der Königin von Jeypore, Orissa. Nach dem die Lehrer und Angestellten Wochen vorher einen Marathon an Vorbereitungen durchlaufen hatten, begann alles mit einem Schulbazar der Kinder, die ihre Handarbeiten, gestrickte Tiere, genähte Taschen, bemalte Kürbisintrumente und viele Naturprodukte feilboten. Der Erlös ging direkt an die Schule. Bevor das Schulprogramm losging hatten die Besuche die Gelegenheit sich auf dem Schulgelände umzusehen und die Atmosphäre der Schule zu genießen. Es wurden Arbeiten der Kinder ausgestellt, eine Fotogalerie der Arbeit der Balamitra Badis aus den abgelegenen Dorfschulen und außerdem eine Ausstellung zum Thema Stammeskultur der Eastern Ghats mit Bildern, Texten und Exponaten. Alle Publikationen der Balamitra Schule standen jedem offen.
Danach konnten die Kinder im Rahmen des Programmes ihren Eltern sowie Interessierten und Sponsoren, zeigen, was sie das Jahr über gelernt hatten. Es ging los mit den traditionellen Adivasi-Gesängen, gefolgt von einem umfangreichen englischen Theaterstück, Gedichten, Flötenmusik, einer Kostprobe der Rudolfsteiner Unterrichtsmethodik und sogar einer Akrobatik-Einlage. Am Ende des Spektakels wurden zunächst alle Geburtstagskinder der Monats hochleben gelassen, danach wurde Dhimsa getanzt. Die Kinder haben zusammen mit ihren Eltern und den Farmern vor Ort den Tackt auf den Trommeln angegeben und gesungen. Bevor der Tag sich dem Ende zuneigte war jeder zum Essen eingeladen. Alles in Allen war es ein rundum gelungener Tag!
The anniversary was agreat success! Many parents of children, village school teachers from the remote areas, friends and acquaintances had come to the new school to see the program of the children.We even had royal visit by the Queen of Jeypore, Orissa. After the big effort weeks before of the staff, the teachers and the volunteers, finally the annual day started with a school bazaar of the children hawking their handicrafts, knittedanimals, sewn bags, painted pumpkin instruments and many natural products.The proceeds went directly to the school. Before the program started the people had the opportunity to visit the campus to look around and enjoy the atmosphere of the school.Bits of the works of the children, a photo gallery of the work of the Balamitra Badis from the remote village schools and also an exhibition on tribal culture of the Eastern Ghats with pictures, text and exhibits were shown. Allpublications of the Balamitra School were open to everyone. As part of the program, the children were able to show their parents, visitors and sponsors what they had learned throughout the year. It started by the traditional Adivasi songs followed from an extensive English drama, poetry, flute music, a taste of Rudolf Steiner teaching method, and even an acrobatic deposit. At the end of the spectacle all the birthdaychildren of the month were cheered. Finally Dhimsa was started and everyone joined. The children, their parents or the local farmers ruled the beat on the drums and sang along. Before the day was drawing to a close, everyone was invitedfor dinner. All in all it was a thoroughly successful day!
Recently, the constructions of new buildings are progressing at the Farm in Dabbanda. The Samata office is going to shift as soon as the location is set up with all the facilities. Soon the Staff will work in huts majorly made of natural materials. This is not only cheaper that concrete buildings, but also more functional in the summer heat as it is cooling and is environmental friendly also. The traditional design of the huts with palm tree trunks as pillar, the roof of bamboo mats and peddy straw, and walls of bricks and soil, suits to the natural surroundings of the Farm. This will be a much nicer place to work, than in the dust and noice of the city.
Vor ein paar Wochen hatte die Balamitra Schule netten Besuch von der Navi-Schule aus Vizag. Das Zusammentreffen wurde durch die Unterstützung einer guten Freundin organisiert, um ein Bewusstsein für die Navi-Kinder zu schaffen im Rahmen eines Projekttages zum Thema Umwelt und Kultur . Ihnen wurde die schöne Umgebung gezeigt, der ökologische Anbau der Felder auf der Farm, eine Bandbreite an Poduerzeugnissen aus Araku, eine kleine Ausstellung zum Thema Tribal Kultur und sie konnten zusammen mit unseren Kindern agieren. Es wurde Dhimsa getanzt, gespielt, gelacht und Freundschaften geschlossen.
Am Ende schenkten die Kinder NAVI den Balamitra Kinder eine Uhr. Wir verteilten einige Broschüren über die Adivasi Kultur und CDs mit den traditionellen Liedern Adivasi. Es war ein lustiger Tag für alle.
A few weeks ago, the school Balamitra had a nice visit from the NAVI School of Vizag. The day was organized with the support of a good friend to create awareness for the NAVIchildren who were on their project day on environment and culture at the Balamitra School. They were shown the beautiful surroundings, the ecological cultivation of the fields on the farm, a range of podu farming products from Araku, a small exhibition about tribal culture, and they could act together with our children. They danced Dhimsa, played, laughed and made friendships. In the end the NAVI children gave one watch as a present to the Balamitra children. We shared some Balamitra booklets about Adivasi culture and CDs with the traditional Adivasi songs.It was a hilarious day for everyone.
Four of the german volunteers shifted to Dabbanda. Now there is a lot of time after the normal lessons to play games and do other activities. The children profit from the close relationship, because they can improve their English faster. The volunteers are more involved in the daily life of the school. Slowly more staff of Samata will shift to Dabbanda, so the Community starts to grow.
Vier der deutschen Freiwilligen sind nun nach Dabbanda gezogen. Dadurch ist eine intensivere Arbeit zwischen den Freiwilligen und den Kindern möglich, denn über das Unterrichten hinaus ist nun viel Zeit, die Freizeit mit den Kindern gemeinsam zu gestalten. Auch das Englisch der Kinder wird sich schneller verbessern, da sie sich nun Rund um die Uhr auf Englisch verständigen müssen. Mit dem Umzug sind die Freiwilligen viel mehr in das alltägliche Leben in Dabbanda integriert. Nach und nach werden immer mehr Samatamitarbeiter nach Dabbanda ziehen.
After Christmas there was a teachers training for all field teachers. The teachers from the Balamitra Model School gave workshops and also a german volunteer called Barbara gave workshops to all teachers. She explained the Waldorfsystem and showed some subjects for example formdrawing. After this event the school had holidays for two weeks.
Nach Weihnachten wurde die zweite Lehrerfortbildung für die Dorfschullehrer in Dabbander veranstaltet. Die Lehrer der Balamitra Model School haben Workshops gegeben und die Lehrpläne überarbeitet, zusätzlich hat Barbara, eine deutsche Waldorflehrerin Workshops für alle Lehrer gegeben, unter anderen über die Waldorfpädagogik. Anschließend sind die Dorfschullehrer mit den Schülern in die Dörfer zurückgefahren und es gab zwei Wochen Ferien für alle.
Die Schule hat 40 neue Schreibbretter bekommen. Jedes Kind hat nun ein eigenes Schreibbrett, das erleichtert die Arbeit im Unterricht und außerdem konnte nun mit dem Wasserfarbenmalen begonnen werden. Das macht den Kindern sehr viel spaß und Dank der Bretter funktioniert es auch gut.
The school got 40 new boards. Now every child has a own board, which is very helpful for the lessons. Besides the water colour classes could start. This is a lot of fun for the children and because of the boards it works very well.
Vom 17.12 bis zum 23.12.2011 sind alle Lehrer in die Dorfschulen gegangen, um die dortige Situation zu protokollieren. In dieser Woche haben die vier deutschen Freiwilligen der "Balamitra Model School" den Unterricht gemacht und zusätzlich jeden Tag Kunstworkshops gegeben. Dabei wurde mit Pappmasché gearbeitet, gestrickt, Kalenderbilder wurden gemalt und Schalen und Schlüsselanhänger gefilzt. Es sind sehr schöne Dinge dabei entstanden, die auf dem jährlichen Frühjahrsbasar verkauft werden. Als Weihnachtsvorbereitung wurde das Christgeburtspiel eingeübt und dann mit von den Kindern gebastelten Requisiten aufgeführt.
All teachers went for a Field Visit from the 17th to the 23rd december 2011. During this week the german volunteers took the lessons and arranged a Craft Week. The children worked with papier mâché, they knitted, drew calendarpictures and felted boxes and keychains. In the end the children had created many beautiful things. These will be sold at the Annual Day. During this time they also practised a Christmasdrama and made the properties for it. The performance was nice.
The awareness of environmental protection is something you should learn from childhood . Dabbanda's dream,to be become a green village, which is about to be, making threads to this regard as its own, open to the suggestion by the German volunteers to conduct a special project. This day of workshop should strive generally waste disposal and waste collection by illustrating the dependence of human beings of water, earth and air. This was conducted by small experiments, topped up with games and songs. In the end, four different types of waste bins were ready produced and painted by teachers and volunteers in four different colors, which were now busy filled by the children, as part of a massive cleanup of the whole area. Everyone involved had a huge pleasure and got enthusiasm for the farm to be a green example.
Das Bewusstsein für Umweltschutz ist etwas, was man von Kindesbeinen an auf lernen sollte. Die Farm Dabbanda steht vor dem Traum ein gruenes Dorf zu werden und macht sich Themen diesbezüglich zu eigen, auch indem sie offen für den Vorschlag der deutschen Freiwillgen stand, einen Projekttag durchzuführen. Dieser Projekttag sollte sich grundsetzlich um das Thema Müllentsorgung und Mülltrennung bemühen, indem den Kindern zunächst die Abhägigkeit der Menschen von Wasser, Erde und Luft verdeutlicht wurde, mit kleinen Experimenten, abgerundet mit Spielen und Gesängen. Am Ende standen vier verschiedene Arten von Mülleinern in vier verschiedenen Farben bereit, die nun von den Kindern emsig befüllt wurden, im Rahmen einer riesigen Aufräumaktion des Gehӧfts. Allen Beteiligten brachte der Projekttag ein riesen Vergnügen und Enthusiasmus für die Fram als grünes Beispiel.
As the school reopened at the new place all children now really enjoy the space they have for playing and discovering. Dabbanda is a place which has similarities to the children’s home villages. This is one reason for the children to feel very comfortable. In October two more volunteers had arrived. Barbara is a Waldorf teacher from Germany and will mainly support an improvement of the teachers educational methods. She is going to stay for 5 months. There is also Jeanne who is a designer from France, who is donating some of her creative capacity with great ideas and great action of woman power. She is organising the layout of the landscape of Dabbanda to improve an aesthetic quality of living within a Green Village community in future. Our surrounding has an immediate impact of our emotions, furthermore, to our minds and ideas. Thus we hope that once Dabbanda is flourishing with the growing potential of the wonderful people living there.
Nun ist es endlich so weit, das Gesamte Inventar der Balamitra-Modell-Schule ist nun nach Dabbanda umgezogen. Zurzeit haben die Kinder Ferien und sind in ihre Heimatdörfer zu ihren Familien gefahren. Wenn sie wieder zurückkehren, beginnt ein neues Schulleben auf der Farm.In dieser Ferienwoche befinden sich nun 50 Lehrer aus den umliegenden Balamitra- Dorschulen auf Dabbanda und nehmen an einer Lehrerschulung teil. Dort bekommen sie Anregungen und praktische Tipps für den Unterricht in den Dörfern.
Balamitra School starts preparing items required for school bazaar well in advance. Handmade art objects are created by the children to be sold. This week the talented children worked happily and made some products whose proceeds will be used as funds for the children of the Balamitra School. The volunteers actively help the children to develop useful projects. They also taught the children bookbinding and sewing dolls.
About two month ago, the new school building was completed on the new location of Balamitra. Earlier, the school was in a rented house at Sagar Nagar, in the city of Visakhapatnam. The farm Dabbanda is located directly adjacent to a national park and will be the new home of all the children. It is an idyllic location between the mountains, forests and small fields of organic farming, and step by step it is going to be self sufficient community. The children have direct access to nature and learn the traditional knowledge of their ancestors on the land and its natural treasures.
Recently the new school was introduced to the children with a small overnight session, together with the school staff and all the volunteers from Germany. The children could freely explore their new surroundings, there were games played, they sang and enjoyed the delicious food left cooked by the house mother.
In the month of September, five motivated volunteers from Germany arrived here safely. They are Selina, Malin, Annika, Simon and Nina, who will work as teachers at Balamitra Model School. They are teaching subjects like English, music and art. Furthermore they will assist creative projects. Soon after their arrival, there was a celebration in honor of the god Ganesha with the children and the school staff. The children artistically made Ganesha idols which were sunk in the sea after the ceremony. The festival ended with cheerful water fights.
Last week, all 40 children of school-Balamitra were happy to admire a breathtaking view over the city of Visakhapatnam, its beach and its beautiful surrounding countryside from ‘Kailasa’ hill. This trip was made just before bidding goodbye to a volunteer of the last year’s batch. On the plateau, there were playgrounds and a huge figure for god shiva and goddess parvathi.
Alle 40 Kinder der Balamitra-Schule konnten letze Woche einen atemberaubenden Ausblick auf die Millionenstadt Visakhapatnam mit Harfen und Strand und deren wunderschöne ländliche Umgebung bewundern. Dieser Ausflug diente dem Abschied einer Freiwilligen des vergangenen Jahres. Auf dem Plateau gab es Spielplätze und eine riesige Abbildung in Stein des Gottes Shiva und der Göttin Parvati auf einer Bank.
Jedes Jahr im Frühling stellt die Balamitra-Schule einen Bazar zusammen und verkauft handgefertigte Kunstgegenstände der Kindern. In dieser Woche arbeiten die talentierten Kinder freudig an ihren Objekten, deren Erlös als Fördermittel für die Kinder der Balamitra-Schule verwendet wird. Die Freiwilligen unterstützen in ihren ersten Wochen tatkräftig, indem sie verschiedene Techniken mit den Kindern zusammen erarbeiten, wie zum Beispiel das Buchbinden oder das Nähen von Puppen.
Vor ca. einem Monat wurden der des neuen Schulgebäudes auf dem neuen Standort von Balamitra fertiggestellt. Zuvor befand sich die Schule mit den Kindern in einem Mietshaus in Sagar Nagar, einem Fischerstädtchen neben der Millionenstadt Visakhapatnam. Nun soll Stück für Stück auf der Farm Dabbanda, die sich direkt neben einem Nationalpark befindet, idyllisch zwischen Bergen, Wäldern und kleinen Feldern ökologischen Landbaus, eine sich selbstversorgende Community entstehen. Die Kinder haben hier direkten Zugang zur Natur und lernen das traditionelle Wissen ihrer Ahnen über das Land und seine natürlichen Schätze.
Vor kurzen Wurde die neue Schule mit einer kleinen Übernachtungssession eingeweiht, zusammen mit allen Freiwilligen aus Deutschland. Die Kinder konnten frei die neue Umgebung erkunden, es wurden Spiele gespielt, man hat ausgelassen gesungen und das gute Essen der Hausmutter genossen.
Anfang diesen Monats sind 5 neue motivierte Freiwillige aus Deutschland wohlbehalten angekommen. Selina, Malin, Annika, Simon und Nina werden in der Balamitra-Modelschule die Faecher Englisch, Formzeichnen, Musik und Kunst unterrichten und kreative Projekte leiten. Zum Auftakt der gemeinsamen Arbeit mit den Freiwilligen wurde bereits ein Fest zu Ehren des Gottes Ganesha mit den Kindern zusammen gefeiert, bei dem kleine, von den Kindern selbst kunstvoll gefertigte Ganeshafiguren im Meer versenkt wurden. Das Fest endete in einer ausgelassenen Wasserschlacht.
Am 13. Juni hat das neue Schuljahr begonnen. Die Kinder sind gluecklich, zurueck zu sein und sich wiederzusehen. Nach den Ferien gibt es nun Klasse zwei bis vier an der Balamitra Schule. Einige Unterrichtsstunden werden am Strand abgehalten. Auf dem Foto koennen Sie eine Formenzeichnenstunde sehen, die alle Kinder genossen haben.
Innerhalb der letzten Wochen haben die Bauarbeiten an einem neuen Schulgebaeude begonnen. Auf einem Farmgelaende genannt Dabbanda in den wunderschoenen Eastern Ghats wurden zwischen Palmen und Cashewnussbaeumen drei neuen Klassenraeume gebaut. Auf dieser Seite koennen Sie sich Fotos anschauen.
During the last weeks the construction of the new school building took place at a farm where the school will move soon. The place is called Dabbanda. Located in the beautiful Eastern Ghats surrounded by Cashews and palm trees three classrooms are built. You can see some photos on this side.
On the 13th of June the school reopened. The children are happy to be back and to see each other again. After the break Balamitra school has now class two to four. Some of the lessons are held at the beach. On the picture you can see a Form drawing lesson which all the children enjoyed.
Balamitra model school celebrated its annual day on the 7th of April 2011 with great zeal and
enthusiasm. Balamitra is a part of Samata, a not-for-profit social justice organisation working
for the assertion of Adivasi people’s rights and their culture. Through its resource center at Sagar
Nagar, it helps adivasi communities in 40 villages across Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam
districts of Andhra Pradesh run their Balamitra Badi’s(schools) and ensure that more than 800
children receive meaningful education. There is a residential school for these children at the
resource centre which focuses on developing a contextual education for adivasi children by
looking within. The centre also provides research and training facilities. The children and
teachers are the primary researchers and resources for documenting their own languages,
histories and sciences. The school is also inspired by Steiner education and teachings and works
closely with the teachers and volunteers from the Waldorf community to develop strong
linkages on education for life skills.
Preparations for the annual day celebrations started well before a month. Materials required to
prepare articles like flower vases, bags, show pieces etc were collected from villages and brought
to the main resource centre. These articles were made by children who were guided by
teachers and volunteers. Children also made paintings especially for the occasion. Rehearsals for
the cultural activities went for nearly one month.
School Bazar, which started at 3.00 pm was the major attraction of the day followed by release
of books on Tribal culture, and a colourful cultural programme . The Executive Director of
Samata Mr. Ravi Rebbapragada, who is known for his pioneering work on the issue of Adivasi
rights, and DRO of Visakhapatnam Mr. Reddy, who was the guest of honour appreciated the
work of children. All the invitees and parents of children who came from the villages, were
enthralled to view the articles displayed. Things like mobile pouches, hair bands, bracelets and
necklace sets, brooms, pumpkins, carry bags, pen stands, body scrubs and some organic products
were available for sale.
At 4.00 pm Mr.Ravi , Mr.Reddy and Mrs. Gunavathi lighted the lamp to mark the inauguration
of the celebration. The guests were greeted with a welcome song by the school children. Mr.
Ravi gave a brief description about Balamitra schools and Mr. Reddy spoke about education in
rural areas. While explaining about Balamitra Tribal education program, Mr. Ravi , mentioned
that Balamitra Badis are Waldorf inspired tribal nature schools. He also explained how the
Adivasi parents impart to their children traditional knowledge and skills that are symbiotic with
their ecology as they live in close harmony with nature and have a deep-rooted understanding of
earth and its elements. It was amazing to know that science, language, medicine, calculations,
geography, philosophy, politics they all are taught orally, spiritually, culturally and experientially
to these children by their parents.
Books on Tribal culture, were released and distributed. Publishing of these books was one of
the parts of the project The books included Adivasi Glossary, recipes, riddles, proverbs, stories,
clay-house building, agriculture, art, plants, etc. Mr. Ravi briefed about the significance of
having these books to the audience. Teachers and children of government Juvenile home were
also invited to the function and it was interesting to see these children enjoying the programme.
Cultural program started at 5.00 pm with a Tribal song. Play depicting the life of Freedom
fighter and Tribal leader Alluri Sitaramaraju was enacted by children. The audience sat spell
bound through out and were surprised when the children recited their dialogues clearly in
Telugu in spite of the fact that they speak different Tribal languages at home. Volunteers
prepared the children with a play named ‘Pancake’ and this was beautifully performed by the
children.
Children captivated the audience with their songs, dances and activities. These activities were
presented by the teachers and volunteers to show how children learn through play. It was seen
that the children learn about tables, months, seasons, continents, countries etc through play way
method. Children also played songs on the flute taught to them by volunteers. Bamboo dance
performed by the children was a very enjoyable.
Some of the guests spoke on issues related to rural education and parents too spoke about the
significance of having Balamitra schools. Organic refreshments were served to the audience
before presenting vote of thanks. The function ended with the performance of Dhimsa dance by
the children, teachers, volunteers and staff and some guests. It was the pleasure of the school to
be with the esteemed presence of the invitees.
