Educara Sumé is located in Brazil’s rural North-East. The non-profit organization of public interest takes care of the education of underprivileged young people in the town of Sumé. Sumé is located in the state of Paraíba, some 140km away from the regional pole of Campina Grande. Most of its 18.000 habitants live below the poverty line.
Currently, about 100 students participate and seize from the diverse and free services Educara offers to the local population.
Educara was founded in 2000 and dramatically changed the chances for education of underprivileged families in Sumé: where up to 2003 less than 1% of school graduates made it to university, now more than 50% of Educara’s scholarship holders make that step and thus realize their dream of higher education.
Thanks to special courses, scholarship holders from Educara get an adequate preparation for the admission tests to Brazilian universities. As most of them are from modest economic background, before and during their studies they are accompanied, supported and coached.
A key concept is that scholarship holders do not get only aid. In return, they help taking care of the younger students, deliver free private lessons and are involved in Educara’s multiple social projects. Accordingly, an increasing number of Educara-members and also the town Sumé take advantage of this program and the “multiplication effect” it generates.
