CARE-emergency: providing the population with water, mosquito nets and hygiene items. Please support us and send a CARE package to São Gonçalo, Brazil.
In the first week of April 2010 Rio de Janeiro has triggered torrential rains, floods and mudslides. Most affected are the cities of São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. São Gonçalo is the second most populated city in the state of Rio de Janeiro and one of the poorest cities in Brazil. Almost 40% of the population live below the poverty line. A landslide in the district "Recreio dos Bandeirantes" in the west of the city has caused great damage, but also many districts in the north are affected by landslides too.
Entire neighbourhoods who settled on the mountain slopes were swept away by the mudslides. Many families have lost their homes; hospitals, schools and kindergartens were destroyed. People are staying with relatives or in shelters and need urgently food and drinking water.
CARE provides immediate support to the affected households: With the help of water tanks 5,000 people are supplied with fresh drinking water. Volunteers should check with so-called “Water test kits” the quality of drinking water in the various districts. CARE also distributes special hygiene packages that focus on the health needs of girls and women. Mosquito nets should help to protect the water cisterns where life-threatening dengue mosquitoes are likely to concentrate and bread.
For the responsible use of donated money CARE is recipient of the DZI seal of donations and the PriceWaterhouse Coopers Transparency Award 2008 (1st place) http://www.care.de/care-finanzen.html. The exemplary defined needs are urgently needed. We guarantee that your donation will benefit the project in Rio de Janeiro.
