Physik Workshop mit Schülern in Kenia

Liebe betterplacianer,

Lamp of Knowledge

One of our partner writes about her recent experience in Kenya: When I saw a Solux solar lamp kit for the first time, I thought that could be a "nice project" to support the acquisition of knowledge in physics:1. It is feasible to assemble a solar lamp in a limited time and with only a few basic tools - and when finished it is immediately usable and interesting for the students. Everyone needs light and many also need to charge their mobile phones. Additionally, clever students may earn an "extra-coin" using the potential created by the system. It will also educate the pupils to be careful when handling the solar panel, battery and other items. So, altogether perfect for a sixth-form student project.

2. It encourages pupils in lower classes to achieve a good performance in physics because the best of the year will receive a solar lamp, thus increasing the interest in this important subject.

3. It attracts other sponsors, especially technically minded men, and is therefore good for the public appearance/work of our association. But when I sat there and watched the students work enthusiastically for hours, I became aware that this action went far beyond what I had imagined as a "nice project". To give a young person the chance to learn by doing is probably one of the most moving moments that one can imagine. And when the first assembled lamp is switched on and is really lighting up and a surprised "WOW!" is heard all around, it caused tears welling up in my eyes. Probably, they never really believed they could do it ... and now this! I became aware what we do to this generation by overwhelming them with consumer goods that they cannot understand - and never have a chance to do! One of the participants summed it up quite well in the end: "now, we call this lamp the “lamp of our knowledge’”.
