The settlers of upstate Bahia, Brazil, (around the city of Buritirama) have to walk very far for their daily drinking water, walks up to 5 hours to find water aren't the exception there. Often those pools, natural waterpits, that they will find, are infested with snakes, frogs and so on and often serve donkeys, cattle and other animals as a source of water as well (View a photo of one such pool. You can figure out the rest).

The registered Austrian nonprofit aid organization "Verein für Quellen und Hilfsprojekte" was set up to fight such conditions. It got started when the now president of the organization, Josef Fink, went to a talk in Pischelsdorf in der Steiermark, Austria five years ago. A native Austrian nun, serving and living in Brazil presented the audience with the miserable conditions people are exposed to in rural areas, lacking - among others - safe drinking water. Soon after Fink decided to found an organization that would cover for their needs for wells. He dubbed it the "Brunnenprojekt" (wells project).

The people from the "Brunnenprojekt" build wells for needy settlers in northeastern Brazil, regardless of their ethnicity or religious affiliation. Wells help them massively to sustain their families and farms, giving them a significantly better health (fewer cases of diarrhea, rashes of the skin, ophthalmitis and fewer early deaths among the elderly and frail etc.). Wells also give them crops, like melons or pineapple, they can sell to raise some money. With revenues made, families can afford minor medical care like some medical supplies or crucial medicines they may need for themselves. In addition, women can cultivate a garden for their families. Enough clean water also makes sure that children and teenagers feel less discriminated against when they have to go to schools or job trainings, all of which by the way are very far from their dwelling places.

Donations you make will make sure the project continues on its road and more people are saved from unacceptable conditions, all too often leading directly to death.

Water brings life, saves lives, makes life better altogether. Haven't you always dreamed of actually saving somebody's life? If so, go ahead, you're totally right with us! We're also glad to give you a document of your donation.
