Why do we eat more water than we drink?
What does the Middle East conflict have to do with water?
Is water a product for privileged people or a human right for everyone?
These questions and more will be addressed during our school project day that focuses on the topic of water. Using interactive methods such as games, simulations and debates, we will work together to raise awareness about these questions.
Ideas of the value and use of water will be explored in the game, “What water means to me…” that all of the students will complete individually and then present together in a group discussion. To raise awareness of personal water use, students will keep a water-use log, no doubt with surprising results! A similar awareness activity will be the “World Game”, which simulates the global distribution of people, wealth and water resources. How much water is used for what purposes in which lands? One answer is provided by the film “Paulina” that shows the life of a girl in Namibia. By trying it out for themselves, students can get an idea of how it is to live with 8 litres of water per day for hygiene and cooking purposes, as many people in some areas of Indonesia do.
What do we hope to accomplish by the end of our project day?
(1) Participants will have a general knowledge of the occurrence, distribution and meaning of water.
(2) Participants can reflect on their personal water use in many areas (household, industry and agriculture)
(3) Participants will have a glimpse into the access and supply of water in other regions of the world
(4) Participants will recognize the conflicts occurring around water resources and how they themselves are connected to such conflicts. They will recognize the complexity of such conflicts and will be able to form their own points of view on the topic.
(5) Participants will be aware that each person should have sufficient access to clean water.
