The international aid organization Habitat for Humanity is actively engaged in an emergency aid program for the worst earthquake in recent history that recently struck of region of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Habitat for Humanity specializes in first-aid measures, the reconstruction of homes in disaster areas and the construction of adequate shelter for poor families.

Hundreds of thousands of people are affected in the region of Port-au-Prince by this severe earthquake of magnitude 7.0 and the subsequent humanitarian catastrophe. The emergency assistance by Habitat for Humanity is in full swing: drinking water, toilets and soup kitchens are beeing provided in makeshift camps. In addition, Habitat for Humanity has begun the immediate cleanup and construction of temporary shelters. The next step is to provide durable transitional shelters for the victims.

Habitat for Humanity has spent the last 26 years working in Haiti and therefore is in a position to use its local office to provide immediate relief supplies and later to help coordinate the long-term reconstruction process. The number of casualties among the 3 million inhabitants and the massive destruction in the densely populated areas of Port-au-Prince is not yet estimated.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, where 55% of the population survive on less than $ 1 per day.
