For many years now, the community of Nzerem has been suffering because of water. Located in steppe and desert terrain, Nzerem is one of the poorest community in Ehime Mbano in Imo State, Nigeria. The inhabitants have to obtain water from overflow collectors of small, unsanitary river. Hepatitis, Diarrhea, intestinal infections, and parasites kill many of the residents each year, 85 per cent of them "children". This causes a desperate search for water, especially for the women, girls, and boys, who are responsible for obtaining water for the household and livestock. Boys and girls have to drop out of school and walk eight to nine miles in deep down valleys a day to get water that the family needs.

Hello! As far as I understand it. SODIS as a NGO and local NGO’s and Government Organisations
are disseminating and promoting SODIS in countries of the South for ten years now. They stated that SODIS is used for the daily treatment of drinking water by about 2 Million users in more than 20 countries worldwide. Impact studies have been carried out and the results are encouraging. Diarrhea was reduced by up to 50 %. SODIS as a programme is recommended by the World Health Organisation which have an Nigerian office in your capital Abuja. Telephone: +234 946 18585/ +234 946 18596 - Fax: +234 946 18591-2 / +234 946 18725 ------------------- Your new website. Interesting to browse. I would like to get information concerning project reporting and as a user of betterplace.org a banner telling people that your organisation Christian Fellowship and Care Foundation is presenting projects on betterplace.org as well. Have a good day!

Dear Clinton Ezeigwe, the following information might be of interest to you. Doing a bit of research I came across www.SODIS.ch and www.thewaterschool.org

Both NGO’s promote the Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) in order to improve the microbiological quality of drinking water, using solar UV-A radiation and temperature to inactivate pathogens causing diarrhea.

    How does SODIS work?

SODIS of Switzerland explains that contaminated water is filled into transparent plastic bottles and exposed to the full sunlight for six hours. During the exposure the sunlight destroys the pathogens.

For further information there is a pamphlet well illustrated describing the method in English:

    http://www.sodis.ch/files/SODIS_pamphlet_e.pdf

Hoping the information will be useful.

    Dear Clinton Ezeigwe,

Could you be so kind as to give some more information about Nzerem village: geographical situation, surface, infrastructure, population, income structure, development achievements, support so far.

If the waterholes are 15 km away, are there any other villages in the neighbourhood using the same ones?

Why did you as a NGO choose to present Nzerem village?

    Thank you in anticipation.

    Yours sincerely,

    Hannelore Knott

Clinton E.: (Project Responsible) answered over 3 years ago

    Dear Hannelore,
Thanks for your questions! The people of Nzerem has been neglected for several years because of their location and lack of accessible road. They are the Igbos that reside in the South East of Nigeria. Most of them are Christian and some are traditionalist. Their primary occupation is farming and of minimal income. No infrastructure, social amenities or viable income structure. They have approximately 15 -20 thousand populations. Yes, there are some other neighboring villages that uses the same waterholes (stream). We choose to present Nzerem village because: they has lacked clean water for decades. In the raining season, residents collected water from tin rooftops or scooped it from polluted streams and small ponds. During the six months dry season, women and children walk several kilometers waiting hours, sometimes overnight to draw water from rivers. That is why CHRIFACAF is soliciting for a bore hole or well to be drill in other to bring clean water to the area.

I hope this information will serve your purpose.

    Regards,
    Clinton Ezeigwe.
