More than three years ago 3 friends and I traveled to the northern area of Thailand, about 4 hours far from the highest spot of Thailand, the Doi Inthanon. There we visited a Karen Hill Tribe village. This village build up on a very high point and the villager before did not have access to water. Especially the children living in a children home there had to walk every day more than 1.5 Km and about 170 meters in altitude difference, just for taking shower. Since we have seen this problem we searching for a solution. The solution was a Water Ram Pump which can lift up the water to the children home which we installed in 2004.
A year ago in September 2008 we found an appropriate solution for drinking water. It was a Biosand Water Filter (BSF). This kind of water filters origin from Canada, Center of Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST). Anyway, in December 2008 we delivered two of this Biosand Filters to this Children home and installed them right away. A month after the installation the people living in the hostel told us about less worms and also nearly no more problems with diarrhea.

One year after this installation the two Biosand Filters are still functioning very well and a lot of the villagers close to the childrens home where asking for this water filter.
There are now 20 more households needing a filter, but the cost of 2,400 THB (approx 50Euro) each filters too high for this people living the rural mountain area of North Thailand.
So we try to raise 48,000 THB (1,010.- Euro) to make this Biosand Filter project in Mae Hae working so that they can have access to clean and safe drinking water.
