Kenya is home to one of the world’s harshest HIV/AIDS epidemics. Around 1.2 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. CIVS is therefore implementing a community development project in Ahero (Western Kenya).
It specifically aims at supporting the HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in this region through increasing household incomes of the local people.
Together with the African Foundation we have constructed the Ahero Resource Center. It provides space for an orphan feeding program, computer training to the youths, a store for the harvest of the community farm and the Community Bank with its different microfinance activities.
We have also constructed a small poultry farm for around 200 chicken. Fresh eggs improve orphans diet, and sales of extra eggs and chickens provide a source of income for the community and multiply in project impact.
A Community Bank was formed in October 2009. it has a current membership of about 200. They are saving money, buying shares and issuing out loans to members to start or boost their small enterprises.
CIVS furthermore leased 5 acre farm to support the orphan feeding program of the project.
