Earthquake in Indonesia – aid measures running at top speed
Germany's Relief Coalition with several helpers engaged in western Java
A severe earthquake shook western Java on 2 September and caused at least 75 deaths and left hundreds injured. At least 100,000 people have become homeless in the severest-hit regions of Tasikmalaya and Garut.
Several alliance partners from Aktion Deutschland Hilft have been engaged in Java since the tsunami in 2004 and the earthquake in 2006 and provide immediate effective aid:
AWO International is helping those affected with mobile clinics. As a local partner, the IBU Foundation treated the injured with three teams in the earthquake area. Moreover, volunteer helpers handed out foodstuffs.
The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund distributes awnings to provide emergency accommodation and prepare further aid.
The action medeor and HELP alliance partners will deliver an “emergency health kit” on Saturday with which 30,000 people can be provided with medical aid.
So-called “family kits” containing blankets, plastic awnings, mats, soap, and so on is being distributed by World Vision in the disaster area.
Further alliance partners as CARE and the Johanniter are currently investigating the possibilities to offer aid.
“We still have no information from all of the places hit, but there are few houses built with steel and are earthquake-proof. We therefore assume that the number of those affected will increase,” says Alex Robinson, ASB worker in Indonesia. “The people are now is especial need of emergency accommodation of awnings and blankets,” reports the experienced helper.
The earthquake registered 7.3 on the Richter scale and caused, in part, devastating damage to an estimated 24,000 houses and made them uninhabitable. Sixty percent of the houses in parts of the Garut district have been destroyed.
