In Berlin, one out of every four children lives below the poverty line; in the severely affected district Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in Berlin, this is even one out of three. The negative impacts on children’s health and development are considerable, and reach even further by also influencing their integration into society and at school. These circumstances have caused those responsible in the district of Friedrichshain to provide a warm meal to children affected by poverty– the “Kinderküche” (children’s kitchen).
Objectives of the children’s kitchen
- To provide a warm meal
The children’s kitchen was established to ensure that children living in poverty will have one warm meal a day at no charge.
- To protect children and promote general health
It is important to us to familiarize children with a healthier lifestyle in a way that they will enjoy. To the extent possible, we wish to practice preparing healthy and fresh foods with them. We do not consider the children’s kitchen to be just a place to get a free meal. This is where children can learn about hygiene, nutrition, health, and social togetherness in general, and can put what they have learned into practice. Moreover, the children are given the opportunity to discuss any issues they may have in their lives with our staff of educational experts and to hear their advice.
- Inclusion of parents
We particularly wish to include parents in our activities at the children’s kitchen. They support us as volunteer cooks on the weekly “parents’ cooking day”. Those of the parents whom we reach in the children’s kitchen and who have any needs in terms of social welfare are informed about what help is available to them and where they can get it.
- Cooperation with other facilities in the region
We understand the children’s kitchen to be one aspect of the services available to disadvantaged children in the region who are affected by poverty.
