The Butterfly Project was instigated in remote rural Nigeria at the end of 2007, working with Ashoka Fellow, Emmanuel Nehemiah. In 2009, Social Enterprise (Africa) CIC brought it to Uganda rural (Lyantonde) and urban slum areas (Kampala). The objective of the project is to locate gifted young people living in the most disadvantaged areas, who have a desire to become social entrepreneurs. The project then stabilises them in their environment, which is often poverty-stricken and then delivers a programme to them, which consists of an academic programme (Project Management and Financial management), an NGO-awareness programme, where they participate in the activities of a local NGO, specialist "stimulus" programme, where they are exposed to creativity (Music, Art, Games, Dance, drama etc.), ongoing mentorship from international social entrepreneurs and, lastly, a user-defined programme designed by the participants, which will include an individual social project led by themselves.
