Skateistan

Skateistan is using skateboarding to provide the youth of Afghanistan a positive outlet. In a war-torn country where the youth make up a vast majority of the population, Skateistan is providing the youth a positive outlet where they can grow, learn, and interact with students from diverse backgrounds.

I spent six months this year as a volunteer with Skateistan. During my internship I taught creative arts and multimedia in classroom, taught skateboarding to over 100 girls every week, liaised with international media, wrote donor reports and proposals, managed online content, and worked with Afghan staff/volunteers to pass on responsibilities and a sense of ownership. The children that attend Skateistan are so grateful to have the sports and educational opportunities open to them, and every single day the NGO is growing and improving its work with youth in Afghanistan. Skateistan is the most important, exciting and rewarding thing I've ever been a part of.

Wenig kann viel bewirken. Gerade Skateistan vermag mit einem sehr kleinen Budget - für Afghanistan klein - wirklich ne Menge zu bewegen, und so das Leben von ner Menge Kids nachhaltig verändern.
Vor Ort durfte ich erfahren, wie effizient und hart die Jungs und Mädels von Skateistan in diesem schwierigen Umfeld arbeiten und wie mit den ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln sorgsam gewirtschaftet wird.

I am going to find ways to raise money and equipment for the kids. My son is 6 years old and a loves to skate. This is a good way of teaching him about how it is in other countries for kids and not everyone has 2 or so skateboards etc. He is already excited about making this a class project. Fully support this project and want to do OUR part.

I live in Austin TX USA, our local skateshop, 'Apparition', supports Skateistan. That's where I learned about this project and I whole heartedly support it. It's ideas like this that bring hope and possibility where often there is none. Please consider supporting this worthy cause.

Spitzen Idee um die kids auf sinnvolle dinge zu bringen

Da ich in Kabul geboren bin (als Kind von Entwicklungshelfern) habe ich immer eine sinnvolle und vor allem sichere Möglichkeit gesucht Afghanische Kinder zu unterstützen. Denn sie sind die Zukunft dieses furchtbar zerstörten Landes. Nachdem ich einen Beitrag auf ARTE über Skateistan gesehen habe, war ich total überzeugt. Diese Kinder brauchen neben Essen, Ausbildung und Unterkunft auch Spiel, Spaß und Sport bei all den Grausamkeiten Ihres Alltags und den Traumata die sie ohne Zweifel erlitten haben. Das ist ein tolles Projekt und ich freue mich über alle kleinen und großen Fortschritte, die es macht.

Ich verlege seit 2007 das Buch von Boris Barschow: "Kabul, ich komme wieder". Mittlerweile ist er zum dritten mal in Afghanistan. Da ich durch ihn ein wenig mit der Problematik des Landes vertraut wurde, habe ich auch ein Auge für andere schöne Aktionen für Frieden und Völkerverständigung. Skateistan ist eine unglaubliche Brücke zum Menschen. Die Skate-Community hat die Kraft diese Brücke zu stärken und das ich möchte tatkräftig unterstützen.
