The x-runner team aims to tackle the global sanitation and water crisis through innovation and international collaboration.
The x-runner toilet has been specifically designed for slums, where the population does not own the land, lives in small, crowded spaces, and where a sewage system is non-existent. Every day, slum dwellers are forced to defecate on the streets or on open fields nearby. This results not only in health issues – as epidemics – but also undermines the basic necessity and dignity of access to adequate sanitation.
The first x-runner toilets will be produced and distributed in India, since the cultural barriers and the growing population pose a major challenge. The sanitation crisis in India is among the worst on a global scale and demands for an effective solution.
x-runner – Sanitation Social Business started in 2008 as a collaboration between betterplace.org, the Universität der Künste Berlin, and the World Toilet Organization.
After a short break, a new team of Indian and German members revived the project at the beginning of 2010. Since then the venture was able to tie additional strong partnerships: Palomar5 brought new “man-power“ to the team in January. This summer Sulabh International agreed to be our main partner in India and currently students from the Technical University in Berlin help us with finalizing the product development.
