Change the world with your donation More

How it works

Anybody can help on betterplace.org – as an individual or as a group. And equally, anybody can receive help not just large well-known charitable organisations, but also small grassroots initiatives round the corner from you, or anywhere in the world. The main thing is: everything is transparent.

Here we show how exactly you can help. Or how you can use betterplace.org as a digital collection tin for your own project.

How you can help

  • Donate to a specific project need, for example to “ 20 euros for a wheelbarrow ”, or else to a project generally e.g. “Building a school in Mombasa, Kenya”. You can always donate anonymously. Rather than a one-off donation, you can become a monthly donor. Also a possibility with many projects: donations in kind or donating your time as a volunteer.
  • Rate it if you happen to know the project manager or if you know more about the project for some other reason. Post your opinion on the project-site, ideally including photos or videos from when you visited the project on-site. You can also ask the project manager questions at any time. Others can use their answers to help them decide whether to donate.
  • Spread the word! The more people who find out about a project, the more support it will get. So post a link to the project site on your Facebook page or include it in your email-signature. Or print out the project page and pin it to a noticeboard somewhere in the “real world”.
  • Do a fundraising event!
For your next birthday, ask for donations to your favourite project rather than presents. Otherwise, think sporty and get sponsored for taking part in a charity run. Start here – or watch the following video
  • For companies: What good cause is your company engaged in? Through betterplace.org hundreds of companies help projects great and small. No handing over a “supersize cheque”, rather the employees, customers, business partners or readers are brought together in a collective transparent campaign. Want to find out more? How to raise funds for your own project.

Anybody can present their own project on betterplace.org – as long as it has a social goal. If it’s done right, betterplace.org can be the simplest way for projects (and organisations) to collect donations from their own surroundings.

Register your project for free on betterplace.org. You’ll automatically get a project profile page, which acts as a digital collecting tin. You can collect donations efficiently, transparently and speedily. With a project profile page …
  • Online! You have an online presence where you can transparently describe the objective of your project and keep your donors informed about its progress.
  • Receive donations: You can receive donations anywhere in the world – we pass on 100% of donations to your project on to you. Donating can be done by credit card, PayPal or banker’s draft (only for recognised German charity projects!) – as a one-off or continual. Certain projects can even receive donations of “loyalty points”. Of course you can also ask for donations in kind or time.
  • Spread it! You can (and you have to!) publicise your project amongst your exisiting donors, friends and acquaintances etc. For example by email, Facebook, Widget or good old-fashioned flyer. Or put our “external donate button” on your website. Publicise your project as much as possible, otherwise the effort’s for nothing and nobody will find out about it – see the important information about this three paragraphs below.
  • Donor-management: you get an automatic notification whenever somebody donates to your project. Communication with donors is possible at any time. The donors have the option of passing their details on to you. And we’ll take care of the processing and donor receipts (only for recognised German charity projects!).
  • That’s not all. You benefit from constant innovation and our years of experience in online-fundraising, for example from Tips & Tricks through the “betterplace lab” or our telephone and email service projects@betterplace.org
  • Having a project profile page on betterplace.org doesn’t mean that you’ll get a flood of donations from complete strangers. Unfortunately the world doesn’t work like that. That means: once you’ve independently directed your friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc to your betterplace.org project profile page, and your project has been supported and rated by people you know, and you’ve tracked the progress on the ground in the project blog – only will the site be discovered, gradually by more and more of the tens of thousands of mostly young betterplace.org members. There’s also a chance that we’ll connect your project with our company and media partners.
