Our mission reads: The Power of Responsibility
Assuming responsibility, putting responsibility into action, inspiring responsibility. As an international group operating worldwide, the Otto Group, which OTTO is a part of, requires and uses the freedom and opportunities provided by global economic activities. We are, however, always aware that this economic freedom and responsibility for people and nature are two sides of the same coin.
It has only recently become clearly evident that business without responsibility leads to crisis. This is why we have once again summed up and spelled out the Otto Group core values. Not just the Executive Board, but each employee is called upon to take on their share of responsibility for his actual work environment, but also for his social environment. For what they do; for how they do it; and for anything that can be improved, however big or small. Together, we want to use our greatest power. The power of responsibility. Through each commitment in the areas of profitability, innovation, diversity and sustainability, we will get closer to fulfilling our responsibility.
About our company:
Otto (GmbH & Co KG) was founded by Werner Otto in 1949 in Hamburg as „OTTO-Versand“. Today, OTTO is a brand known worldwide offering its customers inspiration and an extensive range of textiles, home furnishings and technology. OTTO is a subsidiary of the international Otto Group, employing approximately 4,100 people.
Having become famous and big through its OTTO catalogue, OTTO now considers online retail to be its most important sales channel.
As part of our business activities, we place great emphasis on offering environmentally friendly and socially compatible productst in our assortments and on focusing our business activities towards including these criteria.
Since the mid-80’s, environmental protection has been a component of corporate strategy. Ecological awareness and social responsibility are part of OTTO business operations.
Through our foundations, we contribute towards taking up our share of resposibility.
In 1993, Dr. Michael Otto, son of company founder Werner Otto, established the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection, which aims to preserve life’s basic resource, water. To achieve this, the foundation is active in three fields: support, dialogue and education.
To find out more about the Michael Otto foundation and its projects, please go to www.michaelottostiftung.de.
OTTO also supports the Aid by Trade Foundation set up by Dr. Michael Otto in 2005 which, through its initiative Cotton made in Africa, aims to promote the cultivation of sustainable agricultural and forestry products in developing countries.
It cooperates with public sponsors such as Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) [German investment and development agency ] and the Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) [international cooperation agency], as well as with NGOs such as the WWF, NABU [Nature and Biodiversity Union], the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Welthungerhilfe [world famine relief] and with numerous companies.
The objective of the initiative is to provide help for self-help through trade on the principle of “social business” instead of just helping financially by sending donations. The initiative is working with 240,000 smallholders in fünf African countries.
You will find further information about the Aid by Trade initiative Cotton Made in Africa on www.cotton.made-in-frica.com/en.
You are also welcome to take a look at our CR Report at http://www.ottogroup.com/de/verantwortung/nachhaltigkeit/nachhaltigkeitsbericht.php. Since 2000, it is regularly published by OTTO, documenting how economic, ecological and social responsibility can be balanced and how sustainable aspects are consistently integrated into business processes.
