Food insecurity is a common phenomenon in Wa West district, considered a disaster-prone area. Factors such as seasonal droughts, recurrent annual floods, persistent crop failure and lack of alternative livelihood sources have contributed in making the rural people very vulnerable to food insecurity. With farming as the main occupation for people in area, women livelihoods have been severely threatened following unprecedented floods that hit the Northern Ghana in 2009 and 2010. Cultural factors have further hindered the vulnerable, mostly women, leaving them in a vicious poverty circle. Against this background, LifeCare Ghana, together with some women groups in Tokali community designed this project. The project aims to harness efforts and resources to enhance the livelihood security of vulnerable groups and their families in Tokali community.
A four-man project team has been constituted to work with the two beneficiary communities and district level stakeholders to ensure successful implementation and sustainability.
A four-man project team has been constituted to work with the two beneficiary communities and district level stakeholders to ensure successful implementation and sustainability.
Direct beneficiaries will be 30 vulnerable women and their households, who have lost their livelihoods through the 2009/2010 floods and are threatened by food insecurity. Indirectly, up to 200 people will benefit from the ripple effects of the interventions. Beneficiaries will be mobilized, put into groups, supported to put up an agro-processing centre, trained and supported to engage in shea nut/butter processing and rabbit production.
Our biggest challenge now is raising of sufficient funding for the project.
Donations to the project will be used to acquire grinding mill; a diesel engine; payment to service providers to train 30 women in shea nut processing and rabbit rearing; and procure rabbits as breeding stock for the 30 vulnerable women.
