Skateistan – was ist das?
Skateistan wurde als humanitäres Hilfsprojekt für Kinder und Jugendliche in Afghanistan im Jahr 2007 gegründet. Die Ziele des ambitionierten Projektes sind umfassend: Kindern in Kabul neue Perspektiven eröffnen, Vorurteile abbauen, Gleichberechtigung fördern, wichtige Kenntnisse vermitteln. Aber auch, Freude in das Leben von jungen Menschen zu bringen, die ansonsten wenig zu lachen haben. Das Skateboard ist dabei Vehikel, diese komplexen Ziele zu erreichen.


Skateistan – Eine Chance auch für Mädchen
Von Anfang an war es Skateistans Ziel, auch Mädchen die Ausübung des Sports zu ermöglichen. Dass heute tatsächlich Mädchen auf rollenden Brettern durch Kabul flitzen, ist ein kleines Wunder. Ansonsten ist Mädchen sportliche Betätigung verboten. Dank Skateistan’s Engagement ist hier, ganz im Verborgenen, ein riesiger Schritt in Richtung Gleichberechtigung passiert.

Skateistan – von der Vision zum internationalen Projekt
Skateistan startet im Jahr 2007 mit ein paar Skateboards, die Oliver Percovich und befreundete Westler nach Kabul gebracht hatten und mit denen afghanische Kinder auf dem Schulhof der deutschen Schule in Kabul herumsausen. Aber Skateistan will den Kindern und Jugendlichen mehr bieten:

• Eine Skate-Halle mit Einbauten wie Ramps, Half Pipes, etc., soll die Ausübung des Sports auf hohem Niveau möglich machen. Zudem bietet eine geschlossene Halle den Kindern bestmöglichen Schutz in der angespannten Sicherheitslage.
• Qualifizierte, afghanische Lehrer sollen ausgebildet werden, die sowohl sportlich, als auch pädagogisch engagiert und professionell unterrichten.

    Do you guys have problems with military or political pressure? Can you work freely with the kids, do you also get local support? I have skated for years and to me skateboarding was a important part of my life. Skating is a way of being free and creative. You skate with friends, you use the streets creatively and you want to get better and achieve something. If you can manage to get the skaters into some school classes as well I think you can make a difference. What kind of classes besides skateboarding do you teach?

    Political and military pressure are ever present in any activity in Afghanistan. Obviously our work and strategy is framed within the context of the current political and military situation. Local support is inherent to the implementation of our activities. As you stated, skating is a way of being free and creative. As such, we offer the opportunity for kids to do this in a safe and positive environment and it has been well received by the community so far. Without the kid's and community's desire for Skateistan activities to happen, they wouldn't.

    Currently our programs aim to micro-finance all working, non-enrolled children back into public school. Additionally, we will be providing after school tutoring sessions and pre-skate session classes which discuss health and current events. Also, we will be offering cultural courses in areas such as Afghan poetry, theatre, history, painting/drawing, and music.
